Michael Hugh Dixon

 

Composition is a significant part of Michael’s musical life, having written for a variety of ensembles along with songs and percussion works. A considerable number of compositions are in extended just intonation. His music is published by Wirripang Pty Ltd (www.australiancomposers.com.au).

 

From 2017 Michael has been co-curating SydneyMicroFest, microtonal music. He has a blog exploring brass instruments, harmonics and just intonation, bwhisperer.com and this composition service thenotewhisperer.com.au.

 

Michael’s full-time playing positions were as Principal Horn in the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra (1987-2005) and other orchestras from 1979.

 

He now has contracts with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra (playing natural horn) and Opera Australia Orchestra and others. Chamber music credits include his ensemble LOCANA, Omega Ensemble and Notos Woodwind Quintet.

 

Teaching is an important part of Michael’s work including Inaburra School for which he has written a program for the primary school band, Play with Ease.

 

In 2011 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong after having previously been awarded an MPhil in composition from the University of Queensland and MMus in Musicology from Griffith University.
